What Is a Network Switch?

A network switch is a core component of IT infrastructure that connects devices in a local area network (LAN) to enable them to exchange information effectively by forwarding data only to the intended destination device. Switches operate at Layer 2 (Data Link) or Layer 3 (Network) of the OSI model and are essential components in creating scalable, high-speed, and secure networks.
As opposed to hubs, switches are intelligent—learning MAC addresses and forwarding traffic based on true device locations, reducing collisions and maximizing bandwidth utilization.

What a Switch Does

• Connects devices such as computers, servers, printers, and access points on a LAN
• Routes data traffic effectively based on MAC or IP addresses
• Supports VLANs (Virtual LANs) to isolate network traffic
• Provides QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize mission-critical applications
•  Supports PoE (Power over Ethernet) to power IP phones, cameras, and APs
•  Supports redundancy and failover using protocols like STP, LACP
•  Monitors and controls traffic using SNMP, CLI, or cloud-based controllers

Network Switch Types

Type Description
Unmanaged Switch  Plug-and-play, no installation needed – ideal for small offices
Smart Switch  Basic configuration features (VLAN, QoS) using web interface
Managed Switch erdam to manage performance, security, VLANs, routing, monitoring – ideal for data centers and enterprise
Layer 2 Switch OPERATES at MAC level; VLAN, basic QoS supported
Layer 3 Switch_ADDS routing functionality; appropriate for large networks
PoE Switch DELIVERS power and data over one Ethernet cable
Modular Switch supremacist scalable; supports hot-swappable modules for ports, uplinks, etc.
