What Is a Server?

A server is a high-performance computing device or system that provides data, services, programs, or resources to other computers (known as clients) over a network. Unlike regular personal computers, servers are set up for reliability, uptime, scalability, and handling large volumes of data or numerous simultaneous connections.
Servers can be physical (bare metal) or virtual (VMs) and are used to host websites, operate databases, run applications, process emails, store files, and provide basic services in IT infrastructure.

What Does a Server Do? (Primary Functions)

• Data Storage and Access: Centralized file, document, and backup storage with controlled access permissions
• Application Hosting: Hosting business-critical applications (e.g., ERP, CRM, email services)
• Database Management: Hosting and managing relational and NoSQL databases
• Web Hosting: Hosting web content for users over the internet or intranet
• Virtualization: Hosting several virtual machines using hypervisors
• Authentication & Directory Services: User, role, policy management (e.g., using Active Directory or LDAP)
• Remote Access: Allowing secure connections to internal systems from external devices

Types of Servers

Server Type Description
File Server Stores and manages file access across the network
Database Server Hosts databases such as Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL
Web Server Hosts websites using software such as Apache, NGINX, IIS
Application Server Runs software applications for end users or other systems
Mail Server Sends, receives, and stores emails (e.g., Microsoft Exchange)
Virtualization Server Hosts multiple VMs on software such as VMware ESXi or Hyper-V
Domain Controller Authenticates users and enforces access policies
Cloud Server Cloud-based server infrastructure (AWS EC2, Azure VMs, etc.)
